Why visit Caen?
Caen is a perfect day-trip destination, whether departing from Rouen or Paris. Here is what to see, when to visit, and how to organise your trip without wasting three hours on connections.
Caen, the city of William the Conqueror, is also the gateway to the D-Day landing beaches. The Memorial, the abbeys, and the marina make for a complete day out, with the sea only twenty minutes away.
Located in Calvados, about 235 km from Paris and 125 km from Rouen, Caen is suitable for a day trip or a weekend away. The city is easy to explore once you are there: it is the outward journey and the return trip in the evening that require planning.

Train, coach or private chauffeur for Caen?
Caen is served by the Caen train station, on the Paris Saint-Lazare – Lisieux – Caen – Cherbourg line. Under normal conditions, allow 1 hr 50 to 2 hrs 15 minutes from Paris Saint-Lazare. It is a good solution when everything runs smoothly. The station is a twenty-minute walk from the centre and far from the coast: Ouistreham, Courseulles or the D-Day beaches require further transport.
| Solution | Door-to-door duration | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|
| Train Paris Saint-Lazare → Caen station | 1 hr 50 to 2 hrs 15 + connecting travel | Fixed timetables, luggage to carry, early last departures |
| Regional coach | Often 3 hrs and more | Few departures, no evening service |
| Private car with chauffeur | 2 hrs 30 without changes | Road traffic during peak hours |
Our shuttle service takes over when the rail network fails: strikes, track work, cancelled trains, missed connections, night flights, or simply when travelling with children, professional equipment or too many suitcases for a station platform. We collect you from your address at the time we agree on, and drop you off in Caen with no changes required.

Good to know before you leave
- Bring comfortable shoes: the city centre is best explored on foot.
- Book your visits and restaurant tables in advance during high season.
- Parking is often saturated at weekends: being dropped off saves you from circling for half an hour.
- The Norman climate changes quickly: a windbreaker is warmer than an umbrella against the sea breeze.
- Last trains leave early: check your return time before booking a late dinner.

Taxi, private hire or private shuttle in Caen?
Many travellers look for a “Caen taxi” when they actually need a price known in advance. The difference is simple: a taxi runs on a meter and the cost depends on traffic; a VTC like Navette Privée provides the price upon booking and it does not change, even in the event of traffic jams or a delayed flight.
- Caen Taxi: convenient for a short trip in town, variable price, advance booking rarely guaranteed.
- Caen Private Hire (VTC): booking at your chosen time, known driver, confirmed vehicle, fixed price.
- Caen Airport Shuttle: 315 € to Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle, 310 € to Orly, 285 € to central Paris in a saloon, tolls and luggage included.
For an early morning departure, a late-night return or a Caen – Paris journey with suitcases, the private shuttle is often cheaper than a metered taxi and is always less stressful than a train with a connection. Call 06 88 14 67 82 or request your quote online: we will reply within minutes.
